First Preacher
1798-1810
Donated by: Louisiana Baptists
Tradition has ascribed that he preached the first Evangelical (Baptist) sermon ever heard in Louisiana between 1798 and 1810. The date is unclear because there is no written record. The tradition comes from the recollections of his widow in the late 1840’s. There is little reason to doubt that it happened but when and where it occurred are not certain. Chaney was arrested for preaching unauthorized sermons and imprisoned because it was not Catholicism. After being released he returned to Mississippi.

Leadership with LA WMU, beginning with Acteens/BYW, stretching to Mission Friends and GA and becoming Women’s Missions & Ministry Strategist in April 2007 is what brought her to Louisiana. Church leadership with Mission Friends at FBC Pineville and Acteens and GA at Emmanuel Baptist, Alexandria are personal joys. The overall joy for Janie is that of the “becoming” – to encourage and equip children, teens, and women as they become Kingdom leaders in their churches, as missionaries, and raising children who know and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.
